Restoration of a 1929 Dodge Brothers Touring Car

The Vintage Drivers Club has recently completed the restoration of a 1929 Dodge Brothers Touring Car. The car was previously owned by “Doc” Doherty (a member of the Club and a lifelong Dodge enthusiast) who had purchased the car in 1999 and started the restoration.

Unfortunately, Doc passed away before completing the work and the car was generously donated to the Club by his wife Paula Doherty. Members of the Club set about an extensive “body off” restoration which was completed in record time, considering the impact of COVID lockdowns in Victoria. The whole process was completed in 2021 and covered significant work, including removal of the body, stripping the chassis, replacing damaged body wood & metal work, re-plating (nickel & chrome parts), re-painting the entire car (including the wooden spoked wheels) and replacing the interior trim. The final step of a roadworthy and registration was completed in late December.

The finished car will be used by Club members to promote the Vintage Drivers Club (and it’s aims), encourage prospective members and allow members to experience driving a vintage vehicle (e.g. members who do not own a vintage car or wanting to learn how to drive a vintage car). We hope Doc would approve, in the words of his wife Paula:

“The restoration of Doc’s Dodge will keep Doc’s ethics of generosity, mateship and sharing alive. He loved nothing better than giving others the opportunity to have a drive of his cars, to show youngsters how they worked, and to have mates round to help him tinker.”
